Born in 1963 in Makoni, Zimbabwe, he is an uncle to Itayi and Onias Mupumha, also established artists whom he helped to mentor. From an early age his interest in art was evidenced in how he meticulously moulded his toy animals from clay and then went on become an excellent wood carver at school. After finishing secondary school, Richard tried many jobs until in 1993, after a succession of unfulfilling jobs, he became a full-time sculptor. Richard is also an accomplished guitarist and always carries his guitar on his numerous travels overseas. Recent awards include:
· First Prize, 'Art for Charity' competition, Swiss and Zimbabwean Rotary Project (2016)
· National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) Mixed Media category (2013)
· Brock Awards 2017 honorable mention
Richard held successful workshops and exhibitions in Germany and Spain for several years. Numerous prestigious galleries promote Richard Mupumha, including Gallery Die Lemann (Belgium), The Semba Gallery (South Africa) and Galerie Zvakanaka (The Netherlands) and many in the United States
