Norbert Shamuyarira was born in Chinhoyi, northern Zimbabwe, in 1962. Having lost his mother when he was only nine years of age and his father leaving the homestead shortly thereafter, was devastating for young Norbert. Not long after that, he also lost his brother, who committed suicide.
He found an outlet for his grief when he began sculpting at the age of 17, after a chance encounter with a very famous Zimbabwean sculptor, Bernard Takawira. His family history has had an insightful influence on his work and his sculptures, which often examine human relationships and personal feelings.
He is also known for his amazing sense of humour.
His work is in the Atlanta Airport as part of “Zimbabwe Sculpture, A Tradition in Stone” display.
